6 Reasons Why New England is Great for Gestational Surrogacy

You know what they say about buying a house—Location! Location! Location!  This applies to surrogacy matches too.  It’s all about being in a location that is surrogacy friendly.  The best way to describe surrogacy in New England is “surrogacy friendly”. Read on to find out why we think the 6 New England states are great places to become an intended parent or gestational carrier.

#1 Surrogacy Friendly Laws

New England has some surrogacy friendly laws that protect the rights of both intended parents and surrogates.  We think these laws are among the best in the country.  The states of New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and (most recently) Rhode Island have comprehensive laws on the books specific to gestational surrogacy contracts and pre-birth orders.  Connecitut has a law on the books pertaining to pre-birth orders.  And, finally, Massahcusetts has court decisions authoriing the issurance of pre-birth orders.  All good stuff for surrogates and intended parents in our New England states!

#2 Egg Donors

You need an egg donor?  No problem.  The fertility clinics in New England work with donor egg banks, which is the fastest, most convenient way to obtain donor eggs.  Your prefer a fresh donor cycle?  Also no problem.  New England Surrogacy can direct you to fertility clinics in New England that have fresh cycle donor pools available.  If you want more options, you can match with a donor from an egg donor agency and work with pretty much any fertility clinic in New England.  You have a friend or family member who wants to donate?  Also no problem.  The fertility clinics in New England are used to handling these types of known donor arrangement. Tip: Your fertility clinic will require you to have a written legal agreement, prepared by a lawyer, for your known egg donor arrangement.

An additional bonus if you are from New England is that 4 of the 6 New England states require insurance coverage for infertility treatments such as egg donation.  These 4 states are: New HampshireMassachusettsRhode Island, and Connecticut.  New England is not just “surrogacy friendly” but also “fertility friendly”.

#3 Convenient Location

It’s easy to get to New England from anywhere in the U.S. or anywhere in the world.  We have major airports in Boston, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut for cross-country and international flights (plenty of nonstop flights from California and European destinations).  Flying into New York City or Newark airport in New Jersey are also options for intended parents heading to Connecticut.  New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island are also accessible through smaller commercial airports.  Our states are small in New England so it’s an easy drive to an airport or medical facility in another New England state.  For example, our New Hampshire surrogates can easily drive down to Connecticut for embryo transfer.

#4 Access to Excellent Medical Care

We have excellent academic medical centers providing top-notch care throughout New England.  Intended parents have many choices of top-notch fertility clinics in every New England state except New Hampshire.  Although New Hampshire is in close proximity to clinics in the neighboring New England states.  And the wheels are in motion for the expansion of a Boston fertility clinic into southern New Hampshire.

Gestational carriers are able to get the best medical care during pregnancy.  From Massachusetts General Hopsital in Boston to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire to UConn Health in Connecticut, surrogates ****

#5 Health Insurance

Not only do we have these great medical resources, but we also have many surrogate friendly insurance policies to cover the maternity care that your surrogate receives.  There are definitely some insurance piolicies that exclude coverage for surrogacy—we see this most often in Massachsuetts—so please have your lawyer or an insurance expert review any policy before you rely on it for the surrogate’s maternity care.
