Dear Savvy Surrogate: Surrogacy with Tubes Tied?

Dear Savvy Surrogate:

My husband and I are done having kids. 100% done. No more nighttime feedings for me, thank you very much. I’m so certain about my decision that I had my tubes tied after my last delivery. But I loved being pregnant and would love to give someone else the experience of becoming a parent. Will my tubes being tied interfere with my becoming a gestational surrogate?

Sincerely,

No More Kiddos for Me

Dear No More:

Good news!  You can become a surrogate even if your tubes are tied. As a gestational surrogate, you will become pregnant through in vitro fertilization (IVF).  The embryo transfer procedure for IVF involves the placement of a small catheter through the vagina into the uterus, and the embryos are released directly into the uterus.  Your fallopian tubes are bypassed entirely.

This means your tubes are not needed for the embryo transfer.  If you had a traditional tubal ligation, your doctor will ensure that your tubes are not interfering with your uterine cavity.   This will happen as part of your initial screening with the IVF doctor.

If you had Essure coils placed into your Fallopian tubes, your doctor may require them to be removed in order to ensure the coils will not interfere with a developing fetus.  You may also choose to have the Essure coils removed prior to pursuing surrogacy.

For my other readers who may be looking for a permanent form of birth control and want to leave their options open regarding future surrogacy, they may wish to avoid having Essure coils placed.  Talk to your doctor about other options such as a tubal ligation.

Best wishes!
