Can I Become a Surrogate if I Had an Abortion?
Dear Savvy Surrogate:
I am happily married now, with two children. My marriage is fantastic and my husband is my best friend. But things were not always so rosy for me. In a prior relationship. I made the difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy. I underwent the abortion procedure with no complications. When I get pregnant with my son three years later, I had an easy, uncomplicated pregnancy. Same thing with my daughter two years later. Can I become a surrogate with my prior history of an abortion?
Thanks for your time,
Wondering in New Hampshire
Dear Wondering:
At New England Surrogacy, we do accept candidates who have had prior abortions / pregnancy terminations. Here are some things you should know:
You will need to sign a HIPAA waiver so we can obtain your medical records related to the procedure.
As with all medical records, we take your privacy seriously and we will only disclose the information as necessary for the surrogacy process. This means we do not show your medical records to the intended parents.
This is something that will be important for your IVF doctor to know about, since it is part of your reproductive health history.
You can expect that this will be discussed at your mental health consultation because it's important for you to have come to terms with the event before you can proceed with surrogacy.
Your intended parents will also be informed about this because it’s an important part of your reproductive health history (as are your other two pregnancies and any miscarriages).
Thanks for asking this important question,
The Savvy Surrogate
